Q: My daughter told me she's been having vaginal discomfort. I think she has a yeast infection or something, so that probably means she is having sex. I don't want to jump to conclusions quite yet, so can you let me know your take on it?

A: Don't worry mom. Many young girls who are not yet sexually active can experience yeast infections. It could be something linked to other things like taking antibiotics, wearing synthetic underwear or too tight of jeans. Definitely don't assume she's sexually active just because she's having discomfort. However, you should take her to the doctor either way since this could potentially be her first yeast infection. And most importantly, feel honored that your daughter feels comfortable enough to come to talk to you about this type of stuff. You might want to check out First-Time Sufferers so your daughter can know what to expect
